The final of the 2012 African Cup of Nations played on Sunday between Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire, which Zambia won for the first time ever on penalties (8 – 7) saw huge reactions on Twitter as expected.
Notable football players such as Cote d’Ivoire International and Chelsea FC striker, Didier Drogba became top trending topic on Twitter. Also, ex-Zambian footballer, Kalusha Bwalya was on the number two trending spot worldwide.
Perhaps the most interesting trending topic was that of Cote d’Ivoire football analyst and a SuperSport AFCON 2012 panel member, Mamadou Gaye who had predicted a 4-0 victory for his country over Zambia.
Mamadou Gaye became a huge trending topic on Twitter worldwide and continued to attract hundreds of tweets per second.
The final of the 2012 African Cup of Nations was played at the Stade de l’Amitie in Libreville, Gabon.
