Broadband has become an important part of our lives. It is now a necessity like other utilities such as food, electricity and fuel.

However, ISPs and broadband services in Nigeria have repeatedly been described as Plug ‘n’ Pray services. Simply put, you plug them in and pray they work well.

According to Ookla’s NetIndex, Nigeria currently ranks in 129th place globally and 9th in Africa for broadband speeds. Ookla is the global leader in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications.

Based on millions of recent test results from Speedtest.net, the index compares and ranks consumer download speeds around the globe.

Here’s a list of the top 10 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Nigeria based on current broadband speeds with at least 100 tests in the current index, according to NetIndex.

These results were obtained by analyzing test data between Feb 11, 2012 and Mar 11, 2012. Also, tests from 58,970 unique IPs were taken in Nigeria and of 316,197 total tests, 12,489 were used for the current Index.

Do you think that these results are accurate? Which ISP do you use?

i have tried MTN in Lagos, abuja, PH and Uyo; The day i get 1/100th of the speed you advertise for them I will buy you a good drink!!! MTN was and is much slower than Airtel and Etisalat and only slightly beats Glo.

I have repeated my tests quaterly in these locations since about January 2012 till today 2nd May, 2013 at several loctions in these towns and the data remains same. On a scale- Airtel 650Kb/s, Etisalat 240Kb/s, MTN 45Kb/s and Glo 30Kb/s

Very correct. Presently suffering from their inability to even send in a base-station engineer to look into the connectivity problem of the so-called aviat. That’s what brought me here to search for a better alternative.
