Nigerians love events. If you doubt me, just ask any Nigerian what ‘Owambe’ means. Yet getting tickets to events such as shows, gala nights or concerts hasn’t been a fun experience for most event goers.
In most cases, you’d need to physically go to an eatery, bar or restaurant to purchase event tickets in Nigeria or buy your tickets at the venue of the event, that is, if the event doesn’t sell out before the d-day.
A new events ticketing service by Nigerian entrepreneur, Olaotan Towry-Coker is making it easier for you to buy and sell tickets for African events online and via mobile.
During his stint as a publisher of a magazine called What’s New which featured a city guide, events, hospitality and lifestyle in Lagos, Nigeria, Towry-Coker realised just how cumbersome it was to buy event tickets in Nigeria.
So he taught to himself: Why isn’t the process of buying tickets easier than it is and why does he have to go to a bar or a hotel to buy tickets when he can do that online.
In his quest for answers, Towry-Coker, who previously lived in the UK and always used TicketMaster to buy event tickets online, contacted the UK-based events ticketing company about getting a franchise, but said that “their response was very unfavourable”.
After about four years of nurturing the idea, the undeterred and determined entrepreneur decided to provide a solution and eventually birthed Afritickets in December of 2011.
We recently caught up with Towry-Coker on TechLoy TV and he shared with us his story and success in a three-part video interview.
