Yesterday, I caught up with Andre de Wet, General Manager at PriceCheck, over lunch at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lagos to discuss the price comparison engine founded in 2006 and backed by MIH Internet Africa, a division of the Naspers Group.
PriceCheck claims to be SA’s leading price comparison site, offering the fastest and most relevant search, comprehensive product listings from trusted brand names and credible vendors with wide-ranging reviews and the most sophisticated price comparison technology.
In this short video interview, De Wet told me that the site has over 30 million products in its catalogue, over 6,000 categories and 400 retail shops already.
He also revealed that the site which is launching in Nigeria just before Christmas, has already signed up retail partners such as Jumia and Konga with over a million products available for consumers to compare before buying.
Earlier, De Wet told TechLoy that the service wants to be the prevailing mobile shopping destination when one shops for anything in Africa, offering the service across multiple mobile platforms for easier access.
What that means is that the company is gradually building a search engine exclusively for products and might as well be described as the ‘Amazon for African products’.
When fully launched, the site would allow users to compare product prices such as flights, electronics, broadband, car rental, etc from several online retailers.
