It seems that scammers would stop at nothing to trick unsuspecting MTN subscribers into believing they could win large amounts of airtime, especially when telcos now operate lottery businesses.
A new scam site, MTNPays.com (formerly, MTNBonus.com) has been launched to…err…take MTN’s lottery business to the next level. The site promises that you would win a whooping N50,000 worth of airtime if you recharge only N3,000 worth of MTN recharge card on its portal.
It starts with you receiving a text message saying you have just won N50,000 airtime asking you to visit the site to redeem the bounty. Just don’t fall for it!
To make it appear authentic and secure, they even give you a valid PIN to access the site which has been brandished with the MTN logo on its backdrop.
While MTN may or may not be aware of this trend, it behooves the company not to overlook such fraud cases that although they may not be affiliated with, could cause a bad reputation for its brand.
If MTN or any other company for that matter really wants to learn how to build an online brand reputation, they must start paying attention to their brand mentions online.
Dear MTN, why not start by buying up several domains like MTNSucks.com?
