Opera may have the most popular mobile web browser in Africa, but UC Browser, a Chinese-based mobile web browser may soon overtake it as it has gradually become the second most popular mobile browser in Nigeria.
With over 400 million users worldwide, UC Browser which claims to be the fastest, free and easy to download mobile browser, was released for Android devices last year with its global users already surpassing the 100 million user mark in less than a year.
In November 2012, it overtook the Nokia Xpress browser and now accounts for more than 22% of mobile browser usage in Nigeria compared to Nokia’s about 13% as at January 2013.
With Opera’s continuous decline in terms of usage in Nigeria since the past year, owing to Android’s surge within the same period, even in other feature phone-heavy markets in Africa where it was previously dominant, it seems likely that the UC Browser would surpass it by early 2014.
According to StatCounter, the Opera mobile web browser has lost about 30% market share of mobile web usage in Nigeria, dropping from 88.66% in January 2012 to 59.5% in January 2013, while the UC browser moved from 2.3% in January 2012 to 22.07% in January 2013.
As the second most popular mobile web browser in Nigeria, after the Opera mobile web browser, the UC Browser may soon become the mobile web browser of choice in Nigeria.
