Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, one of the most innovative banks in Nigeria, which has been a pioneer in the brand use of social media in Nigeria has become the first commercial brand and bank in Nigeria to reach 1 million fans on Facebook.
Techloy gathered that the company’s Facebook page grew from 199,000 fans in February 2012 to 1,000,1800 in February 2013, while engagement on the page increased by 200%.
Another key statistic is that there is an average of 32,100 people talking about its Facebook page on a daily basis and the company is constantly reaching an average of 103,232 people on every post it makes.
Since 2009, when GTBank embraced social media, they have been at the forefront and can easily be described as one of the best corporate brand use of digital media in Nigeria.
In fact, we learnt that the bank has a customer service team that is dedicated to managing its social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and most recently Pinterest and Linkedin.
After launching arguably Nigeria’s first and best digital magazine called Ndani, the bank embarked on the most ambitious media undertaking (by any bank) with its digital TV platform called Ndani.TV which features interesting interviews and stories of some of Africa’s finest in fashion, music, arts, movies, business and technology.
The highly innovative bank took its digital moves further by announcing late last year that it would launch a service it calls ‘Social Banking’ which offers “a very convenient way to view your account balance, get airtime recharge, perform money transfers, pay bills, and open additional accounts”, on its Facebook page.
The service expected to launch this year would be a Facebook application that connects its banking system to Facebook’s social graph and make the process of transferring money to your friends, family, employees, clients or partners and withdrawing funds social and fun.
Today, it has achieved a significant milestone in its goal of reaching millions of young people through the most popular social network and now seems to be the only bank that has the undivided attention of the youth.
This news comes just about a month after The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye emerged the first Nigerian brand to hit one million likes on the popular social network.
And just a few days after Nollywood actress, Omotola became the first Nigerian act to have one million fans on the site.
