Wikipedia To Make Its Billions of Articles Available Via SMS
Wikipedia is working to makes its over 25 billion articles accessible to users via SMS simply by sending a short message to a USSD code/predefined number. The SMS service is expected to be launched in a few months for both developed and developing markets where smartphones and internet connectivity are still sporadic. Wikipedia’s new service joins another programme launched in late 2011 called “Wikipedia Zero,” which is a text-only version and has since begun rolling out to 330 million users in Russia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, among other regions. However, the service would depend on cooperation from wireless providers.
