Rocket Internet-Backed Vehicle Classified Ad Site, Carmido Launches To Challenge Cheki
While Cheki could easily be regarded as the largest classified ads site for cars in Nigeria at the moment, with almost 15,000 listings, a new entrant has launched to take on the service.
Backed by German-based Rocket Internet, Carmido is an online marketplace for vehicle classifieds in Nigeria. Like every other auto classified ad listing service, the site allows you to buy or sell new or used cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles from private users or professional dealers across Nigeria.
As it seems, there really isn’t any thing unique about the service, except that it claims to be the number one online marketplace for vehicle classifieds in Nigeria. Yeah, ‘number one’, even though it barely launched a few weeks ago, and has a paltry number of cars (about 140) listed on the site currently. Heck, it doesn’t even have a single motorcycle or commercial vehicle listed yet.
Being a new service, it is not surprising that it is free to use, unlike other services like Cheki that charges you N1,000 to sell your vehicle. But the free model isn’t game changing either, although this may change soon.
In all, I think that Carmido (that name sucks too) would need to offer a simple and intuitive user interface with an awesome search functionality, aggregate huge volumes of vehicle data as well as introduce the right widget distribution strategy to be able to beat its competition, Cheki.
It would also need a bit of luck to succeed in a market that it doesn’t seem to understand.
