Rocket Internet May Be Launching An Online Hotel Booking Site For Africa
We’ve just received a tip-off that Rocket Internet is planning on launching an online hotel booking service for Africa called Jovago to rival leading accommodation booking site SafariNow, owned by One Media Africa.
The company which has already launched several successful Internet ventures in Africa including Jumia, Kaymu, Wimdu, Hellofood and Zando is said to be adding Jovago (site not yet accessible) to its portfolio.
But while I’m not sure, there are indications that it might be ex-Rocket Internet executives that are launching this new hotel booking service. Earlier this year, two of its alumni co-founded Hong-Kong based startup, HotelQuickly — together with other founders — a last-minute hotel booking app which wants to become the HotelTonight of Asia.
Whatever the case, it appears that this move would pose a serious threat to local hotel booking startups such as Hotels.ng co-founded by Mark Essien, which recently received funding from Bastian Gotter and Jason Njoku’s company builder, SPARK.
It would be interesting to see how things go within this space and we’ll be keeping an eye on these companies in the months ahead.
