South African recruitment startup, Giraffe crowned ‘Seedstars World Best Startup’

As reported yesterday, the finals of the Seedstars World startup competition, an international startup competition investing in top entrepreneurs from emerging markets, has taken place today (it came to an end a few hours ago) with South African recruitment startup, Giraffe, claiming top spot.

Giraffe is a revolutionary new mobile recruitment tool that aims to reduce unemployment in South Africa.

Giraffe’s journey to the finals of the international startup competition wasn’t an easy one. The startup competed with several amazing and industry-disrupting startups to emerge winner of Seedstars Johannesburg.

By winning Seedstars Johanneburg, Giraffe booked a place to fly South Africa’s flag (and invariably Africa’s) at the global finals of the competition.

Before the finals, Giraffe and 62 other startups – 16 from Africa – were mentored by a group of domain experts, serial entrepreneurs and corporate leaders in preparation for the D-Day.

After the live pitches on D-day, the judges selected Giraffe as the winner of the competition, winning the mouth-watering prize at stake – US$500,000 in investment and other juicy prizes – and crowned with the prestigious denomination ‘Seedstars World Best Startup’.

Founded in 2015, Giraffe, aims to reduce unemployment in South Africa by being the fastest and cheapest way for businesses to recruit medium skilled workers.

After being operational for only 10 months, Giraffe reached 70k users, leading to the expansion of its team to accommodate its rapid growth.

To help with its mission, the startup launched a new, improved version of its candidate selection algorithm late last year. With the new algorithm, businesses would be able to find even more suitable candidates within 48 hours of request.

The finals wasn’t only about Giraffe. Loan Duong from Omniup Ads, a Moroccan startup which provides an integrated solution (patented worldwide) and free Internet via Wi-Fi, won Hublot woman prize. Several other startups won amazing prizes courtesy of the event partners.

The finals, which had in attendance the best minds from the fast growing startup scenes of Africa, Asia, LATAM, CEE and the MENA region, took place a few hours ago at the SwissTech Convention Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Last year, the Seedstars World team travelled to 52 countries across the world in search of the best startups to invest in.

2013-founded and Switzerland-headquartered Seedstars World has a simple vision: to reduce unemployment in emerging markets through the promotion and investment in entrepreneurship.
