Blackberry on 20 December 2013 reported losses worth 4.4 billion US dollars for the third quarter ending in November, sending shares plummeting by 7 per cent during pre-market trading. The struggling Canadian smarthphone maker had already posted losses totalling 965 million dollars in the second quarter. Intense competition from Apple's iPhone and Android and Windows smartphones are the source of its woes, with many Blackberry customers switching the other brands. Worldwide revenues for Blackberry in the third quarter came in at 1.2 billion dollars, compared with 2.7 billion in the same period last year, as sales in the company's focus markets of Asia shrunk by half. I know you must wondering who the “them” are!

A couple of weeks back, WhatsApp Inc announced that WhatsApp Messenger will no longer work on BlackBerry – including BlackBerry 10 and BBOS– by the end of 2016.

As if that wasn’t a big enough blow, Facebook has also announced it will discontinue support of its essential APIs for BlackBerry.

Obviously, BlackBerry Ltd is disappointed with these decisions.

“We are extremely disappointed in their decision as we know so manu users love these apps. We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds but at this time, their decision stands…,” BlackBerry stated in a post

BlackBerry Ltd aren’t the only ones disappointed – their users and developers are too. To ensure both WhatsApp Inc. and Facebook Inc. know about their displeasure, BlackBerry Ltd has asked users to “let them know how you feel” using the hashtag #ILoveBB10Apps on Twitter.

We all hope WhatsApp Inc. and Facebook Inc. change their minds. I’m feeling disappointed too…

As a way of supporting its developers, who create thousands of apps every month, BlackBerry Ltd has launched “Great Apps on BlackBerry”. On this platform, some of the best native apps on BlackBerry World will be listed.

BlackBerry Ltd will also continue to invest in apps that are important to users. It recently updated its Twitter app with another update, which will bring in new features, coming in a month’s time.
