The 2016 East African Tour of Startup Sauna, the leading startup accelerator in Northern Europe, has come to an end with six startups emerging winners from the Tanzanian and Ethiopian leg of the Tour.
The Tour attracted quite a large number of startups from Tanzania and Ethiopia. The selected startups received feedback and advice from highly experienced Finnish, Tanzanian and Ethiopian coaches with serial entrepreneur and angel investor backgrounds.
This was followed by a pitching session in front of a jury, who selected six impressive startups as winners of the competition. The winning startups are described below:
EcoAct – a ‘plastic timber’ made from plastic waste.
Colifly – ‘Uber of medicine’ medication delivered with drones to rural areas.
TangoTV – Swahili ‘Netflix’ with 160 million target.
Karat – street-based house numbering systems to make addresses easily findable.
Green Kiosk – a movable solar-powered kiosk for charging phones in off-grid rural areas.
Silew Mushroom Production – mushroom cultivation and distributed cultivation and collection.
The six startups have booked a place in Startup Sauna’s prestigious accelerator program taking place in Finland from May 2 – June 3, 2016.
Colifly and Karta won tickets to take part in this year’s Slush, Europe’s leading startup event while EcoAct received the Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) award for the startup with the most social impact at the Dar es Salaam event.
There were inspirational keynotes and knowledge sharing sessions, panel discussions and mini-bootcamps during the Tour.
The Tanzanian leg of the Tour took place at the Buni Innovation Hub on March 17-18, 2016 while the Ethiopian leg held on March 21-22 at iceaddis.
The events were organized in partnership with Buni, iceaddis, Embassy of Finland in Addis Ababa, TANZICT, COSTECH, HDIF and others.
