Team ReportTaka, which developed a garbage reporting app, has won the #SmartCityNairobi Challenge, a hackathon to create solutions to problems in Nairobi using Twitter’s API with the support of Twitter’s Developer Relations Team.
The app – ReportTaka – allows citizens to take photographs of unattended garbage and post to the app. The app in turn informs the city council of the illegal dump sites, posts on Twitter and tags city council’s handle.
This will ensure a clean city, unclogged drainages and help manage the flood menace in the city.
The winning team, alongside the second- and third-placed teams (NaiMotion and FixMtaa) received US$2,000 each.
The three teams will continue on a 6 week programme which includes red membership at the iHub, support and mentorship from Twitter and iHub teams.
At the end of the programme, the teams will pitch their solutions to technology experts. The winner will receive a cash prize of US$10,000 while the second and third placed team will receive US$7,000 and US$5000 respectively.
The hackathon brought together several coders, hackers, designers, developers et al from across Kenya.
The #SmartCityNairobi Challenge took place at the Nairobi Tech Week which held on April 27-30, 2016 at Strathmore University.
