Google launches new set of women-themed emoji to promote gender equality

In a bid to promote gender equality, Google has announced the launch of a new set of women-themed emoji.

Prior to the launch, there weren’t much women-themed emoji, especially those that highlight the diversity of women’s careers, or empower young girls – as opposed to men-themed ones.

Google realized something has to be done, and back in May proposed a set of new women-themed emoji to the Unicode Technical Committee.

These emoji have now been approved. They are 11 in number and come in both female and male options and with all the skin tones.

Apart from these, Unicode is also adding male and female versions to 33 existing emoji. One of these is a female runner emoji and a male runner emoji. Another is a man or woman getting a haircut.

These new emoji will be included in future versions of Android and other platforms – it is Unicode’s job to enable people with different phones send and receive the same emoji.

“We hope these updates help make emoji just a little more representative of the millions of people around the 🌎 who use them,” said Nicole Bleuel, Marketing Lead & Diversity Champion, Emoji.
