Wi-Connect wins Seedstars Luanda, books ticket to global finals

Wi-Connect, a solution that makes Internet free and available for all Angolans, has won the Angolan leg of Seedstars World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes.

Following calls for applications, Wi-Connect and 10 other promising tech startups were selected to pitch at the event, aptly named Seedstars Luanda.

On the day of the event proper, all the startups pitched in front of a prestigious jury for a chance to come out tops.

After questions and deliberations, the jury, which included Claudia Makadristo, Associate at Seedstars World, and Armando Teixeira, Director at FACRA, picked Wi-Connect as the winner of the contest.

“We have created this startups because we believe that making everyone connected has the opportunity to make Angola a better place,” said Paulo Aurojo, Founder and CEO of Wi-Connect.

Aside being crowned the most promising seed-stage startup of Seedstars Luanda 2016, Wi-Connect has booked a place at Seedstars Summit, which takes place in Switzerland in March 2017.

The Summit is a weeklong training program with the opportunity to meet the other winners from across the world, as well as investors and mentors.

The final day of the Summit will see all the startups pitch in front of an audience of 1000 attendees with the possibility of winning up to the US$1 million equity investment.

1st runner up was Kiandastream, a music streaming service focused on African artists and bands and SOBA, an e-commerce fashion company, grabbed the last spot in the top 3.

“The quality of startups, pitches and ideas was impressive, which we believe is a sign that the ecosystem is growing and producing more high quality startups and entrepreneurs. We are happy to take Wi-Connect to our regional and Global summit and follow his path to success. We will also keep an eye on the other startup and are looking forward to come back next year,” said Claudia Makadristo, Associate for Seedstars World Luanda.

The event took place on July 27, 2016 at the Magna room of Banco Económico in Luanda.

FACRA, one of Africa’s largest VC funds, and local ambassador, KiandaHub were the main supporters of the event.

“Congratulations to the winner WiConnect that will represent the country in the Global final, and most importantly has the nobel mission to provide free Internet access to underserved communities,”
