Yea, you read that right! Nigeria is having an August visitor in August, and the person is none other than Mark Zuckerberg, the dude who really needs no introduction.
According to a post on his Facebook Page, his first stop will be at Co-Creation Hub, Nigeria’s finest accelerator and incubator, to talk to kids at a Summer Coding Camp and to entrepreneurs who build and launch products from there.
He’ll also be learning as much as he can about Nigeria’s budding technology ecosystem which, according to Mark, is full of energy!
As for his next port of call, Mark didn’t say but I’m pretty sure he’s not leaving tonight. There’s a lot of Facebook related events happening in Lagos which I’m sure he’ll be attending.
First is a workshop for Facebook Developers happening in Lagos tomorrow. The event is for Facebook’s Priority Partners who’ll be provided with exclusive hands-on instruction via code-labs, tech-talks, and updates on the latest Facebook Platform products designed to help them build and grow a successful business.
Ime Archibong, Facebook’s Director of Global Product Partnerships, and other big guns from Facebook, will be speaking at the event, and I’m sure Zuck will join in.
Details of the event are sketchy, but reports have it that the service will be launched this week.
For the uninitiated, Express WiFi is a Facebook initiative to bring Internet connectivity to underserved locations around the world. It’s an internet.org initiative, just like Free Basics.
What other thing might Zuckerberg do in Nigeria? The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative invested US$24 million in Andela, a talent accelerator co-founded by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, a while back. Who knows, he might be visiting their HQ for a “meet & greet”.
That’s as much as I can think of right now but I’ll be bringing in more updates as I get them.
In the meantime, you can head over to Mark’s Facebook Page. He’s responding to questions thrown at him by Nigerians. The dude is already having fun!!!
