Snapchat changes name to Snap, outs sunglasses with camera

Evan Spiegel, co-founder & CEO of Snapchat Inc, which developed Snapchat, a photo and video messaging app, has announced a change in the company’s name.

Snapchat Inc. will now do business/trade as Snap Inc. (Wall Street take note), which is simply described as “a camera company.”

According to Evan, the company was developing other products besides Snapchat and the name change was needed to reflect this.

“When we were just getting started it made sense to name our company Snapchat Inc., because Snapchat was our only product! Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product – but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand,” Evan said.

The name change, according to Evan, will, among other things, ensure users get relevant product information rather “than boring company information or financial analysis” when they do searches online.

Snapchat, the app, will continue to operate as Snapchat.

As for Spectacles, it is a sunglass with a wireless camera embedded – the smallest video cam out there – for easily creating Memories. In a single charge, Spectacles can take a day’s worth of Snaps!

Unlike mobile phones, Spectacles records videos in a circular format, which can be played full screen on any device, in any orientation, and captures the human perspective with a 115 degree field of view.

Spectacles connect directly to Snapchat via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and transfer your Memories directly into the app.

It will come in three different colours and cost US$130. It will be available in limited quantity before fall (September 22 – December 20, 2016) runs out.

“We hope that this change will improve your experience with Snapchat and Spectacles, and create a structure that allows us to continue making great new products for you and your friends!,” Evan added.
