MTN appoints Felleng Sekha head of its regulatory affairs

MTN Group, a South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company, has announced the appointment of Felleng Shekha as the head of its regulatory affairs.

A lawyer, Shekha has expertise in the management of political, public policy, law and regulatory risk through a career spanning about twenty years in the ICT industry.

She has worked with policy makers, regulators, ministers, legislators and industry stakeholders to formulate policy, legislation and regulatory systems.

Between 1999 and 2006, she worked in MTN Group in different capacities. She led the the acquisition of GSM license in Nigeria, and spent five years as MTN’s Executive Director, Corporate Services.

Her appointment as Executive, Regulatory Affairs and Public Policy is obviously as result of MTN Nigeria’s many troubles with the Nigerian Government.

The telco was fined US$5 billion for not disconnecting inactive phone lines after deadline, and recently accused of illegally shipping out US$14 billion out of the country, which it has since denied.

“Felleng will…shape public policy and regulatory outcomes which are key to MTN achieving its business objectives,” said Chris Maroleng, MTN spokesman.
