Coffee shops are popping up everywhere.

Starbucks and Dunkin’ no longer dominate the industry. Around 20 coffee chains within the firm’s Top 500 list expanded significantly by adding nearly 1,400 new locations. That’s what Technomic has found.

Six of these chains stood out by adding over 50 new units each. Well-known giants like Starbucks and Dunkin’ aside, those include Biggby Coffee, Scooter’s Coffee, 7 Brew Drive Thru Coffee, and Dutch Bros Coffee.

With all this growth, it’s clear that the coffee industry is thriving. While it’s an excellent time to capitalize on the trend and open a coffee shop, know that the competition is fierce.

Opening a coffee shop isn’t just about having good coffee—although that definitely helps. But it takes much more than a good brew to stand out in this crowded market.

Here, we’ll uncover some secrets that can help you create a coffee shop that customers love to visit again and again.

#1 Your Coffee is Everything—But It’s Not the Only Thing

Coffee is, of course, the heart of your business, and it has to be great—there’s no getting around that. High-quality beans, precise brewing methods, and consistently good flavor are, hence, non-negotiable.

But here’s the kicker: great coffee alone won’t keep your customers coming back. But it’s the overall experience that turns first-time visitors into loyal regulars.

Think about how your shop makes people feel. Do customers feel valued and seen when they walk through the door? A friendly greeting and personalized service go a long way in making someone feel at home.

Consider the little touches that enhance the experience beyond the cup—cozy seating, ambient lighting, and free Wi-Fi.

Some coffee shops whose interiors are as delicious as their coffees are Anh Coffee Roastery (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam), Muchacho (Atlanta), and Muchacho (Atlanta). Take a look at them if you need inspiration.

#2 Offer a Variety of Products

Coffee is your bread and butter. But think beyond just lattes and cappuccinos.

What if people who don’t drink coffee drop by your coffee shop? Do you have options, like teas or smoothies, for them? If you don’t, add them to your menu.

Don’t forget snacks. Perfect Daily Grind suggests customers now prefer drinking coffee with fresh, high-quality food.

White Bison Coffee in Nashville, TN, for instance, serves great breakfast along with coffee drinks. The cafe’s breakfast menu includes fresh fruit, made-to-order sandwiches, scrambler bowls, and parfaits.

Offer variety to your customers, hence. A few thoughtfully selected pastries, sandwiches or even gluten-free and vegan options can cater to a wider audience. That aside, offering an array of items will boost sales as well as give customers more reasons to stick around.

#3 Build a Website With an Integrated Online Ordering System

The coffee industry has transitioned online, states a recent publication of the Perfect Daily Grind. You should, too.

Having a website isn’t just a nice extra; it’s a must. People love convenience. If they can check out your menu and order ahead, it will make your coffee shop even more appealing.

Design a website that is easy to navigate, visually appealing, and, most importantly, mobile-friendly. Your website should reflect your coffee shop’s vibe so that people get a feel for your shop when they visit it.

Don’t take the traditional route of building a website, though. It will be time-consuming as well as expensive.

Take advantage of AI-powered website builders instead. These tools put together a professional yet engaging website in no more than five minutes.

You don’t need to be a design or a coding expert. The AI, Hocoos says, handles all the technical stuff, so anyone can create a website.

Your website, even though AI-generated, will be tailored to your needs. That is because AI wizards ask businesses their requirements before getting down to the task of building a site.

As soon as your site is ready, integrate an online ordering system. This will allow your customers to skip the line and grab their favorite drink while on the go.

Before you integrate payment methods, decide which currency you will accept payments in. Make sure to connect popular payment methods like PayPal or Stripe so that none of your customers face issues during checkout.

#4 Train Your Baristas Well

Your baristas are just as important as the coffee itself. They’re the ones interacting with your customers, making the drinks, and setting the tone for the entire shop.

Invest time in their training—not just how to make a perfect latte but also in customer service. Friendly, knowledgeable baristas who know regulars by name and can chat about different brews make people feel valued.

Make sure they know how to handle busy times without getting frazzled and how to maintain a positive attitude, even when there’s a line out the door.

Running a successful coffee shop is about so much more than just serving great coffee. It’s about creating an inviting atmosphere, offering a diverse menu, and making sure your baristas are well-trained.

If you focus on these areas, you’ll be well on your way to creating a coffee shop that people love and keep coming back to.
