4 Tech Opportunities You Can Still Apply to in 2026

Building a career in technology or turning an idea into a business often requires more than technical skills.

Access to funding, mentorship, practical training and the right professional networks can make a significant difference, particularly for aspiring founders, students and early-career professionals.

Several organisations are currently accepting applications for programmes designed to help people develop these skills and pursue new opportunities. From a free artificial intelligence certificate offered by Carnegie Mellon University to a two-year entrepreneurship programme with scholarships, these opportunities cater to different career stages and ambitions.

2027 Tech Internships: SpaceX, Google, Graphcore and Waymo

These four internship opportunities offer students and graduates a chance to gain hands-on experience in AI and relevant fields.

/1. Carnegie Mellon University AI Certificate for Africa

Learners interested in artificial intelligence can apply for the Carnegie Mellon University AI Certificate for Africa, a free online programme designed to help participants develop practical AI skills and build solutions relevant to the continent.

The programme consists of six online courses covering the foundations of AI and its practical applications. Through hands-on exercises and industry-standard tools, participants learn how to develop AI-powered solutions to problems affecting African businesses, communities and industries.

The curriculum goes beyond introducing learners to AI concepts. Participants will develop the ability to evaluate AI tools, build models, assess their performance, and determine whether their solutions can address real-world challenges.

By the end of the programme, learners should be better equipped to identify opportunities for AI adoption and develop solutions suited to African markets.

The certificate is particularly relevant for students, aspiring AI practitioners and professionals looking to strengthen their technical skills without paying for a conventional university programme.

• Programme: Six-course online certificate in artificial intelligence.
• Benefits: Practical AI training, hands-on exercises, and experience with industry-standard tools.
• Eligibility: Qualified applicants interested in developing AI skills and solutions for Africa.
• Cost: Free for qualified applicants.
• Application deadline: November 15, 2026.

/2. Google Africa Virtual Algorithms Workshop 2026

Computer science and engineering students who want to improve their problem-solving skills can apply for the Google Africa Virtual Algorithms Workshop 2026.

The online workshop is designed for university students and recent graduates across Africa who want to strengthen their understanding of algorithms and data structures, particularly in preparation for software engineering interviews.

Participants will learn from Google engineers, who will explain how to approach unfamiliar technical problems, work through coding challenges under time constraints, and communicate their reasoning effectively.

The workshop also offers insight into what interviewers look for during technical assessments. This can help participants understand how to structure their solutions, identify efficient approaches, and improve their performance in coding interviews.

Unlike a longer training programme, the workshop takes place over a single day, making it a useful option for students and graduates looking for focused preparation before applying for software engineering roles.

• Programme: Virtual algorithms and technical interview preparation workshop.
• Benefits: Sessions with Google engineers, problem-solving techniques, and insights into software engineering interviews.
• Eligibility: Computer science and engineering students and recent graduates across Africa.
• Format: Online.
• Workshop date: October 31, 2026.
• Application deadline: October 31, 2026.
