Amazon eyes India's Prime Video expansion as it cuts back operations globally
India is considered one of the fastest-growing entertainment and media markets.
With more people signing up for Amazon Prime in India than anywhere else in the world for the last several years, according to Mike Hopkins, the senior Vice President of Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, the American streaming giant is keen more than ever to increase its investments in the Southeast Asian country.
As it looks to attract the next 250 million subscribers from outside of the United States, it now wants to release more than 70 new TV series and films on its streaming platform in India in the coming years. This makes sense since India is considered one of the fastest-growing entertainment and media markets in the world – projected to reach $37.4 billion by 2026 from $27.9 billion in 2023, according to a March 2024 report by EY.
Per Bloomberg, Amazon Prime will be bringing back its popular Hindi web series including Mirzapur, Paatal Lok, Panchaayat and a local chapter of Citadel, its $300 million spy thriller.
