Android 15 launches with exciting features — here’s all you need to know

It's now available to select Google Pixel devices.

by Kelechi Edeh Louis Eriakha

After months of anticipation, Android 15 is officially rolling out, starting with select Google Pixel devices. This update follows its exciting preview at Google I/O 2024 and a comprehensive beta testing phase, building on what Android 14 introduced back in October 2023.

Android 15 comes packed with a variety of new features that aim to improve how users interact with their devices. With other manufacturers, including Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and more, gearing up to roll out their updates "in the coming months," this release is set to raise expectations across the Android ecosystem.

Google releases Android 15, but it’s only for developers
This exciting update is currently in beta, offering developers a chance to get acquainted before its public release.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the confirmed, standout features that you won't want to miss out on:

Anti-Theft Protection

Taking a page from Apple’s playbook, Android 15 introduces a suite of anti-theft features designed to protect your device and data. The update makes it harder for thieves to reset or access your device, with changes like requiring a PIN or biometric authentication for sensitive settings like Find My Device.

If multiple failed login attempts are detected, your device locks down to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, the enhanced Factory Reset Protection ensures that resetting your device is a challenge for thieves, significantly reducing the resale value and safeguarding your personal information.

Satellite Messaging

Android 15 enhances satellite connectivity support, enabling users to send SMS, MMS, and RCS messages even in areas without cellular coverage. This feature builds on the existing ability to send emergency SOS messages from Pixel 9 devices using Android 14.

Now, with the expanded functionality, users can communicate reliably in remote locations and during emergencies, ensuring that staying connected is more accessible than ever.

Private Space for Sensitive Apps

With Private Space, Android 15 allows users to create a secure area for sensitive applications. This feature provides an extra layer of protection through a separate user profile, enabling users to keep their private apps hidden from view.

When Private Space is locked, those apps and their notifications are hidden from recent views and other apps, ensuring that your sensitive information remains confidential.

Predictive Back Gestures

For a while now, gestures have been intended to enhance navigation on your device. However, I’ve often found myself accidentally swiping the wrong way and getting lost.

With the Android 15 update, things are changing. The new "Predictive Back" feature lets you preview the screen you're about to swipe to, making it feel more intuitive and user-friendly.

New Collapsible Volume Panel

The new Android 15 update features a new collapsible volume panel that allows you to control all your volume settings from any screen.

It appears as a pop-up on the side and allows users more control over their sounds. This means you won’t need to interrupt your activities just to adjust your ringtone volume.

Bluetooth Upgrades

Bluetooth has received two upgrades in the latest Android version. First, your device's Bluetooth will automatically turn back on after being off for a while. While this might seem like a battery drain, it's actually a security feature. Google explains that Bluetooth plays a key role in "Find My Device" by creating a network of nearby devices, making it easier to locate any lost items when more devices have their Bluetooth enabled.

The second update is coming to Bluetooth settings, and it feels more tailored to people who always keep their Bluetooth on. Or more specifically, if you find yourself constantly connecting to different tools and gadgets a lot. Bluetooth will now have a pop-up dialogue section. With this, users can control what gadgets or devices their phone connects to easily.

Open App pairs Launch Shortcut

Do you tend to use two apps in split-screen mode on your device? Well, Android 15 has a new trick just for you.

Instead of fiddling around to open the two apps one at a time, users can create a shortcut that launches both apps simultaneously. Thereby saving you time, and energy and making you even more productive.

The Talkback feature is now AI-powered

The Talkback accessibility feature has been a part of Android since 2016 and has served as a way for users to hear the things on their screen. But, with the new Android 15 release, the Talkback feature is getting a little AI boost, making the feature better by allowing it to be more descriptive with just about anything on screen even without a description added to it.

Conclusion

With Android 15, Google is not just improving its operating system; it’s setting a new standard for user experience and security. The introduction of anti-theft features, expanded satellite messaging, and an AI-boosted Talkback functionality reflects a commitment to user safety and accessibility.

Pixel users can quickly access these updates through Settings > System > System updates. Meanwhile, anticipation grows for users of other manufacturers like Samsung, who are also gearing up to roll out their updates in the coming months. The impact of these innovations across the Android ecosystem will be fascinating to observe, as they reshape how users interact with their devices and ensure a more secure experience.
