Amid the rise of AI features integration into smartphones, Apple is under pressure to enhance the AI capabilities on its smartphones and has reportedly gotten in talks with Google to use Google's Gemini AI model for upcoming iPhone features.

While Apple has been working on an internal rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT, recent indications of potential partnerships with third-party AI technologies suggest Apple's internal AI efforts may be lagging prompting a recognition of the advanced tools offered by competitors like Google.

Meanwhile, Google already has an edge in launching smartphone-related features, demonstrated through partnerships with Samsung for the Galaxy AI features and the integration of Gemini-powered AI features in its Pixel phones, making a collaboration with Google an appealing prospect.

Word on the "tech street" is that Google's generative large-language models will incorporate new features into iOS 18, expected later this year. These new AI capabilities are anticipated to be particularly focused on on-device operations that do not rely on internet connectivity.

Given that Google is already the default search engine on the over 2 billion active Apple devices, a collaboration with Google for AI features could further solidify Google's position as Apple's preferred search engine provider.
