What to Expect and How to Watch the Apple Event 2024

The highly anticipated Apple Event is finally just around the corner.

by Louis Eriakha Kelechi Edeh

Just days ago, Apple announced their launch event. The anticipation of the event had made tensions high and spirits rise this beautiful Tech-tember. There are many things we expect to see at the coming event, and even more predictions have been made as regards this.

With all the buzz and rush of news coming from everywhere, it might be hard to keep up with things. Here is a rundown of what to expect from them this year's event.

iPhone 16 Lineup

First off, we know for sure that the iPhone 16 lineup is going to get unveiled. With reports claiming that India will also produce its Pro models, there are many things to expect from the company's marquee product.

We expect to see four versions at the coming launch event. The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

  • Design: Rumor has it that the iPhone 16 lineup could most likely be their biggest yet. The base models are expected to be the same size as last year's Pro Models while the iPhone 16 Pro models could possibly be announced at 6.3 and 6.9 inches. Making them the biggest iPhones from Apple.
  • Surprise Features: This year's iPhone is expected to feature two extra buttons on the side. In other words, aside from the buttons we're used to, we could possibly get the action button from the iPhone 15 Pro, and, a capture button that can be used when taking photos or videos. This is definitely one way to draw more attention to the phone's camera.
  • Software: Alongside the usual bumps in storage and a fresh iOS 18 look, there's been word going around about this year's lineup also utilizing Apple Intelligence in some of its operations. Cleared pictures, faster processing, and Chat GPT-powered virtual assistant too are all expected to be a main part of the phone.
iPhone 16 Features and Pricing: What to Expect
With lots of rumors surrounding Apple’s release in September, here is a compilation of the ones that are most likely true.

Aside from their iPhone launch, some of the other devices are expected to have new iterations unveiled at this event. Here's a rundown of what else to expect.

Apple Watch Series 10

The year is quite special for the Apple Watch Series 10 (or Apple Watch Series X as I personally wish that is what it ends up being called) as it marks the 10th year since the watch's introduction to the world.

There have been many rumors about what to expect, although nothing is certain yet as we can all just coast on rumors till the actual launch, we expect the watch to come with a whole new makeover.

  • Design: Rumors have it that the watch will feature a slightly bigger design this time. Instead of its usual 41mm, we might see Apple's standard watch series looking a bit more like their Ultra series at 49mm. The watch could also possibly feature a change in its strap mechanics. Sources say this might be done to make the device easier to adjust on the wrist and maybe even more comfortable. This would make sense, but the problem that might come with this is previous iterations of the strap might no longer be compatible with this one.
  • Chipset: On the bright side, we expect newer chipsets in the Apple Watch Series 10 this year. There isn't much hope that Apple will bring Apple Intelligence to the watch as they have brought in their other devices, such as the iPhone, Mac, and iPad. This might just be on a later device or on a later software update all together.
  • Software: Speaking of software, according to Engadget, there might not be many new features. Not even new health features. Reports state that Apple ran into some difficulties with developing proper health tools so that might take a while too.

AirPods 4

Apple is expected to introduce two new versions of its AirPods with the AirPods 4 release, offering both an entry-level model and a mid-tier version. These new models are set to replace the current AirPods 2 and AirPods 3.

  • Design: Both models are likely to feature a redesigned look with shorter stems, similar to the AirPods Pro, and may offer an improved fit for better comfort.
  • Noise Cancellation: The mid-tier version is expected to include Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), potentially making this feature available at a more affordable price. This model might not be branded as 'AirPods 4 Pro' and could lack silicone ear tips, which are found in the AirPods Pro.
  • Audio Quality: Both versions are expected to have enhanced audio quality, possibly powered by the H2 chip from the second-generation AirPods Pro. This chip is likely to enable richer bass, clearer sound, and better overall audio performance.
  • Charging: Both models are expected to come with a USB-C charging case, replacing the Lightning port. The mid-tier model might support wireless charging, while the entry-level model may not.
  • Additional Features: The mid-tier version could include a speaker in the charging case for Find My location tracking, a feature that might not be available in the entry-level model.
  • Pro and Max Models: No updates are expected for the AirPods Pro at this event. The AirPods Max, which still uses a Lightning port and hasn’t been updated in over three years, is also not expected to receive an update at this event.

Additional Releases

  • Software Updates:
    • iOS 18: Expected to be officially released for iPhones shortly after the event, following several months of beta testing.
    • iPadOS 18: The new software update for iPads is likely to be announced with a similar release timeline as iOS 18.
    • watchOS 11: The latest software for Apple Watch is anticipated to launch this fall, with release details possibly shared during the event.
    • tvOS 18: Apple TV users can expect the new tvOS 18 updates, with an announcement on its release date likely during the event.
  • Potential Hardware Announcements:
    • Redesigned Mac Mini: Rumors suggest Apple may introduce a redesigned Mac mini, potentially the smallest desktop computer the company has ever produced. Two versions could be offered: one with a standard M4 chip and another with a more powerful M4 Pro chip. However, this announcement might be reserved for a later, Mac-focused event.
    • iPad Mini Refresh: There is speculation about a new iPad mini, as the last update was in 2021. However, it’s not typical for Apple to announce new iPads during its iPhone event, so this may also be delayed to a future announcement.

How to Watch

To catch all the excitement from the Apple event, be sure to tune in on Monday, September 9th, at 5 p.m. GMT (10 a.m. PDT, 1 p.m. EDT). The event will be streamed live on multiple platforms, including Apple’s official website, their YouTube channel, and the Apple TV app. This ensures that no matter where you are, you can easily follow along with all the latest announcements and product reveals.

Conclusion

As Apple’s much-anticipated event approaches, the excitement is building. With the expected unveiling of the iPhone 16 lineup, updates to the AirPods, and the Apple Watch Series 10, there's plenty to look forward to.

While some details are still speculative, Apple is undoubtedly set to make a significant impact with its latest releases. Whether you're eager to see the newest smartphone innovations or curious about updates to your favourite devices, this event promises to be a major highlight of Tech-tember.
