Apple Rolls Out iOS 18.3 Update With Changes to AI Notification Summaries and Visual Intelligence
Since Apple hinted at Apple intelligence last year, the expectancy of their product rose, but there have been some drawbacks when it came to fulfillment. One notable disappointment was the AI notification summaries released with iOS 18.
The notification summary update was intended to be helpful, however, there were several claims of inaccuracies with the AI notification summaries. For instance, several BBC news users reported to have gotten a summarized notification that the tennis star, Rafael Nadal, is gay, contrary to what BBC reported. Well, as expected, Apple received backlash for that and has made a few changes to the AI feature with the release of iOS 18.3.
With this upgrade made to the notification summary, all notification summaries are italicized, so that you can easily distinguish them as AI summaries and not actual news headlines. However, the feature is temporarily disabled for all news apps following the scandalous BBC moment.
Visual Intelligence which was also released with iOS 18 has also been upgraded to iOS 18.3 expanding its recognition, specifically the real-time identification of plants and animals. When an item is detected, a new button at the top of the screen will reveal more information about the currently viewed animal or plant.
Visual Intelligence also came with a new feature for scanning posters and flyers. By tapping a date in the Visual Intelligence interface, you can add a Calendar event based on the scanned information, making it easier to set future reminders of events.
The iOS 18.3 is available for iPhone XR and later models. However, Apple Intelligence is only supported on iPhone 15 pro and later models. If you use a version before the iPhone 15 pro, you do not meet the hardware requirement to use the AI summary and visual intelligence, unfortunately.
To update your iOS version to iOS 18.3, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
