Apple to launch its first-ever Smart Display devices with HomeOS next year

Amazon and Google have long dominated the smart display market, with Amazon’s Echo controlling about 60% of the U.S. market and Google’s Nest Hub holding around 20-30%. Now, Apple finally seems ready to challenge these giants in 2025 with its own smart display devices.

According to reports from Bloomberg, Apple is developing two new models, code-named J595 and J490, both expected to run on HomeOS—a new operating system based on tvOS, which powers Apple TV and has been adapted for HomePod Software.

The J595, positioned as a premium model, is rumoured to feature a large iPad-like display and possibly a robotic arm. Priced at over $1,000, it will be significantly more expensive than the Amazon Echo Show 10 ($249.99) and the Google Nest Hub Max ($229).

However, the higher price may reflect Apple’s inclusion of Apple Intelligence and local AI processing, which promise faster performance and stronger privacy protections—areas where Apple has traditionally outshined its competitors.

In contrast, the J490 is expected to be a more affordable option, focused on essential features like FaceTime calls and smart home control, similar to Google’s Nest Hub. This model could offer users a simpler, lower-cost entry into Apple’s smart home ecosystem.

Both devices are expected to integrate tightly with HomeKit and other Apple products through HomeOS. This integration, combined with local AI processing, could give Apple an edge over Amazon and Google’s cloud-reliant systems, offering greater security and efficiency.

In addition to smart home control, these displays are rumoured to support apps like Calendar, Notes, and Home, with possible magnetic mounting options and hand gesture controls for added convenience.

With a focus on privacy, premium design, and advanced AI capabilities, Apple’s smart displays will likely complement its existing HomePod and HomeKit lineup, positioning the company as a high-end alternative to Amazon and Google.

If reports hold true, Apple could reshape the smart display market and how users interact with smart home technology in 2025.
