Bangladesh Reportedly Blocked Internet and Social Media Amidst Protests
Amidst a wave of protests gripping the nation, Bangladesh is said to have imposed a temporary block on the country's Internet, mobile data services and several popular social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, according to local news media.
The government's decision to restrict access to these platforms is likely a response to concerns about the spread of misinformation and the potential for social media to fuel further protests.
The month-long protests which have left hundreds of people dead began after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government proposed a controversial quota system that aims to provide reservations in government jobs to individuals whose family members participated in Bangladesh’s liberation movement.
Hasina resigned and fled to India on Monday, per multiple news reports.
The ban has sparked a heated debate about freedom of expression and the role of the government in regulating online content. While some argue that the government's actions were necessary to maintain public order, others contend that it was a heavy-handed approach that infringed upon the rights of citizens.
Beyond the immediate impact on communication and social interaction, the ban also has implications for businesses and individuals who rely on these platforms for commerce, marketing, and information sharing.
Bangladesh is not the only country to resort to such bans. According to Statista, at least 71 countries have blocked or restricted access to social media between 2015 and 2022 for varied reasons, reflecting diverse approaches to digital control.
As the situation in Bangladesh continues to evolve, it is important to note that the government's decision to restrict online access will undoubtedly be a subject of ongoing debate and scrutiny.
