Bluesky Gets Major Update: Longer Videos and Improved Direct Messaging
I'm loving how it makes the platform more competitive and creator-friendly.
Raise your hand if your Bluesky DMs are a disaster zone. And videos? Forget about sharing anything substantial. Bluesky just heard our cries... and dropped a fix.
The decentralized social media platform founded by X’s (formerly Twitter) former CEO Jack Dorsey, has been steadily gaining traction as an X alternative. It's still the new kid on the block building a loyal following of folks looking for something less…well, chaotic. And Bluesky just threw down the gauntlet with an update that speaks directly to two major user gripes: video limits and DM inbox nightmares.

Users can now upload videos up to 3 minutes long, this is a game-changer for creators who want to share tutorials, vlogs, or longer clips without switching platforms. For context, that matches Instagram Reels now.
DMs also get a sanity boost with a “Chat Requests” inbox. Messages from strangers or non-mutual followers now land in a separate spot. You decide what gets through, just like on X – keeping the spammers at bay and your main inbox. On the same note, muting accounts is now a single tap from the main feed menu – even faster than before.
Bluesky's latest update is a major user win. Longer videos and a less chaotic inbox make the platform way more competitive and creator-friendly.
