Bluesky Rolls Out a 'Trending' Topics Feature
The feature allows users to easily explore the most popular conversations happening on the platform.
Bluesky, the fast-rising social media platform that is challenging X (formerly Twitter) gave its users a festive surprise this Christmas by introducing a new Trending topics feature.
Currently in beta testing, the feature is already fully functional, allowing users to easily explore the most popular conversations happening on the platform.
To access the Trending topics, users only need to press the 'Search' (magnifying glass) icon at the bottom of the screen on the mobile app and on the left sidebar on the web. By clicking the Search icon, users can view trending topics displayed as clickable text bubbles.
Selecting a topic takes users directly to the latest discussions and posts, offering an intuitive and engaging browsing experience.
Launched globally on December 25, the feature is accessible through both the mobile app and the desktop version, though it is currently limited to English.
To prioritize user preferences, Bluesky noted that muted words or phrases are automatically excluded from the trending feed, ensuring users see only the content they want.
For those less interested in trending topics, the feature can be disabled through the app's settings or dismissed with a simple click of the 'X' mark next to the section—a thoughtful touch that highlights Bluesky’s commitment to customization and user satisfaction.
The rollout of trending topics represents a significant milestone for Bluesky as it continues to enhance user engagement and enable real-time content discovery. It had recently added features such as a mentions tab and private messaging capabilities. The platform is also preparing to launch a subscription service called Bluesky+, which will offer exclusive perks for paying users.
While similar features exist on other platforms like X (formerly Twitter), the introduction of trending topics comes at a time of rapid growth for Bluesky, positioning it as a formidable rival to X.
The platform recently surpassed 25 million users, fueled in part by Elon Musk’s controversial ties with Trump and dissatisfaction among X users with recent policy changes. In the weeks following the election, it has attracted users dissatisfied with X, recording up to one million new sign-ups per day, highlighting its increasing popularity as an alternative to more established social media platforms.
Meanwhile, Threads, another competitor, introduced a trending feature earlier this year, However, its availability has been region-specific to only the US, giving Bluesky a competitive edge with its global release.
As the platform continues to grow and refine its offerings, the introduction of trending topics underscores its potential to redefine how users engage with social media. With further updates and features planned, Bluesky is positioning itself as a strong contender in the evolving microblogging landscape.
