CHART: Which country spends the most time on social media?
As social media’s influence continues to grow, so do discussions about its effects on productivity, mental health, and personal connections.
Since the early 2000s, social media has transformed from a novelty to a necessity in daily life. Initially seen as a way to connect with family and friends, social media has expanded to encompass news, shopping, education, and entertainment.
By October 2024, over 5.52 billion people were using the internet, with 5.22 billion of them active on social media, according to Statista. This equates to 63.8% of the global population – a staggering reach. The sheer scale of this digital revolution is reshaping how we communicate, work, and spend our leisure time.
Despite its numerous benefits, the ever-increasing time spent on social media raises questions about productivity and personal well-being.
Research from GWI reveals that users now average about 2 hours and 24 minutes on social media daily, making up 35.8% of their online activities. This means that, with an average of seven to eight hours of sleep, around 14% of people’s waking hours are devoted solely to social media. In fact, humanity collectively spends over 12 billion hours on social media daily, or the equivalent of 1.38 million years of human existence each day.
