ChatGPT Can Now Edit Code Directly in Your Coding Platform
The update is a big step toward more seamless AI-assisted coding.
You know how Grammarly tweaks your sentences right inside your document—fixing typos, improving clarity, and making edits with a click? Now, picture that same concept, but for coding.
That’s exactly what OpenAI just did with its latest update to the ChatGPT app for macOS. Developers can now let ChatGPT directly edit code inside their favourite coding platform—no more copying and pasting suggestions or manually applying changes. ChatGPT can make the edits for you.
This update builds on OpenAI’s "Work with Apps" feature, which was introduced in late 2024. That feature allowed ChatGPT to read and understand the code you were working on inside environments like VS Code, Xcode, and JetBrains.

But now, OpenAI removed an extra step: instead of just giving feedback, ChatGPT can apply its suggestions directly to your codebase. And if you're feeling particularly trusting —or just tired of clicking —there’s an "auto-apply" mode that lets it make changes automatically.
For Mac users, this is a major win. While AI coding assistants aren’t new, GitHub Copilot and Cursor have offered in-editor AI suggestions for a while—but ChatGPT’s update makes it a stronger competitor. GitHub’s own research shows that 92% of developers use AI, and a growing number rely on tools like Copilot to speed up development. OpenAI seems eager to claim its slice of that market, and with ChatGPT’s broad general knowledge and now hands-on coding abilities, it might just pull ahead.
That said, not everyone gets access immediately. The direct code editing feature is rolling out first to Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, with Enterprise, Edu, and free-tier users getting it next week. Windows users will have to wait a bit longer, though OpenAI has confirmed that support is coming soon.
Of course, with AI-generated code, there are always trade-offs. While AI can significantly boost productivity, it also raises concerns about security, copyright, and overall reliability.
Still, this update is a big step toward more seamless AI-assisted coding. Instead of just being a chatbot that suggests fixes, ChatGPT is now becoming an active coding assistant, making real-time changes inside your coding platform. Whether developers embrace it as a Copilot alternative or remain cautious about handing over control, one thing is clear—AI coding tools are evolving fast, and OpenAI is making sure it stays in the race.
