ChatGPT has established itself as one of the most prominent tools in generative AI, grabbing 69.9% of the market share of AI tools, according to Backlinko.

Since its launch, it has become a go-to resource for over 200 million weekly active users worldwide, offering everything from answering questions to aiding in creative tasks.

But while it has been successful, it could never really replace more personal AI assistants like Alexa, Siri or Gemini when it comes to more personal things like creating schedules.

That's why OpenAI is introducing a new feature called "Tasks".

ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode could get vision capabilities soon
It will be able to talk about things as they are on camera, interacting with your environment live.

Still in its beta phase, "Tasks" allows users to schedule reminders, alerts, and notifications with ease. For instance, users can set daily weather updates, monthly library book renewal reminders, or birthday notifications.

Unlike Alexa or Siri, Tasks doesn’t integrate with external apps like Google Calendar or Apple Reminders. Notifications are instead delivered directly through the ChatGPT app, syncing across web and mobile platforms. This means you can get the notification from wherever your account is logged in.

Additionally, Tasks can also offer suggestions based on user conversations, while still requiring your approval before taking action. Currently, the feature is available to paid users under the Plus, Team, or Pro tiers, with a limit of 10 active tasks at a time. Free-tier users might gain access in the future, though this hasn’t been confirmed.

ChatGPT Plus is going to get a bit more expensive soon
It turns out running an AI-powered chatbot is really expensive.

By combining conversational intelligence with practical task management, OpenAI positions itself as a potential competitor in the evolving personal AI assistant market.

However, some challenges remain. A lot of current AI assistants are also very deeply integrated into other products offered by their company. For example, Gemini is integrated into other Google workspace services like Docs and Sheets, making it ideal for those already in the Google ecosystem. This integration might make it harder for users to switch to ChatGPT.

The 10-task limit also feels restrictive, but since Tasks is still in beta, this could change by the time a stable version is released.

That said, the addition could be the beginning of a promising evolution for ChatGPT. As OpenAI continues to refine the feature, it could become a significant player in the personal assistant market, making it an exciting development to watch.
