ChatGPT-Powered Search Engine on the Horizon to Rival Google Search

The battle for search engine supremacy might again be kicking up some dust as rumours swirl about a potential May 9th unveiling of a new web search engine powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT.

OpenAI, known for its chatbot, ChatGPT, is rumoured to be launching its search engine, potentially challenging Google's dominance in the search market.

While ChatGPT can already browse the internet to provide answers, this new search engine could potentially provide AI-powered summaries and deliver quick results in a style similar to Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE).

Just like Google Bard, ChatGPT can now browse the internet
Following an earlier attempt that was shortlived, generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has regained real-time internet browsing capabilities, thanks to a collaboration with Microsoft Bing. The addition of the new feature called “Browse with Bing” means that ChatGPT’s over 100 million unique users will now get more insightful and real-time responses

This speculation stems from a Twitter user spotting the creation of SSL certificates for the domain "search.chatgpt.com" and a cryptic tweet hinting at a May 9th launch date.

The timing in particular is interesting as rumours suggest that the rumoured event will occur just a week before Google's I/O event, the search giant's developers' event, where announcements regarding the Pixel 8a and Pixel 9 series are also anticipated - well timed to steal Google's thunder.

Google currently holds a staggering 92.08% market share in the search engine world according to StatCounter. That is a mountain to climb. Even Microsoft's Bing search engine has yet to meaningfully dent Google's market share despite integrating ChatGPT.

However, the arrival of a more intuitive, AI-powered search engine by ChatGPT, makes strategic sense for both OpenAI and its backer Microsoft, with the possibility of chipping away at Google's stronghold search engine.

While the details remain under wraps, the potential arrival of a ChatGPT-powered search engine could bring life into the largely stagnant search landscape. And with May 9th fast approaching, we'll soon know what OpenAI has up its sleeve.
