CHART: ChatGPT surpasses Google Chrome in user count as AI search becomes mainstream
The continued demand for AI-powered search has helped it reach record user visits.
In an astonishing show of momentum, OpenAI's ChatGPT has now surpassed Google Chrome in terms of number of monthly visits, capturing a milestone that underscores the rising dominance of generative AI.
Google Chrome, which has long held a top spot in global digital usage, took 16 years to achieve its current monthly visits of around 3.45 billion. ChatGPT, on the other hand, has matched and surpassed that mark in less than two years, according to data from Similarweb.
Since its late 2022 launch, ChatGPT has evolved from a simple chatbot to a multifunctional AI platform, offering tools like image generation, integrated search, and data summarization. This rapid development has made it a go-to digital companion, attracting users ranging from students and professionals to everyday users.
By early 2023, it had already become one of the largest websites in the world. And, as of October 2024, ChatGPT’s monthly visits reached an unprecedented 3.7 billion, a 17.2% month-over-month growth and a 115.9% year-over-year (YoY) that’s more than doubled from October 2023, per the Similarweb data.
