Cloud region will contribute over $2.1 billion to South Africa, says report

Google launched a cloud region in South Africa this week, joining other cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure that have established a presence on the continent a few years ago.

According to research by AlphaBeta Economics, commissioned by Google Cloud, the South African cloud region will contribute over $2.1 billion to South Africa’s GDP and support the creation of more than 40,000 jobs by 2030.

The three biggest cloud storage providers in the world by market share are Amazon's AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. As of the second quarter of 2022, Google Cloud has about 10% share of the $200 billion cloud market, according to estimates from Synergy Research Group.

Amazon’s market share in the worldwide cloud infrastructure market amounted to 34% in the second quarter of 2022, exceeding the combined market share of its two largest competitors, Microsoft Azure (21%) and Google Cloud (10%).
