Elon Musk is reportedly hiring AI researchers to develop an OpenAI rival

Elon Musk is reportedly enlisting the help of AI researchers to develop a ChatGPT rival, the high-profile chatbot made by OpenAI, a company he co-founded, per a report by The Information.

The news comes a week after Musk expressed his displeasure at OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft saying  “OpenAI was created as an open-source, non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.”

Musk had cut ties with OpenAI which he cofounded as an investor in 2015 due to disagreements with leadership over the entity’s nonprofit status.

The billionaire also lamented that OpenAI was “training AI to be woke.” Being a promoter of free speech, he has been critical of OpenAI for filtering out harmful content from the data so as to make ChatGPT less biased.

He is now reportedly recruiting several AI researchers including Igor Babuschkin, a researcher who recently left Alphabet's DeepMind AI unit, to pursue a new, AI-center project that would feature a chatbot with fewer speech restrictions that could be integrated into Twitter.

However the project is still in the early stages, with no concrete plan to develop specific products, the report said.
