CHART: European EV Sales Increased Over 13% YoY in Q1 2023

During the first quarter of 2023, Europe experienced a notable increase of over 13% in YoY sales of passenger electric vehicles (EVs) even though overall passenger car sales in Europe are still below pre-COVID-19 levels, the latest research from Counterpoint’s Europe Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Tracker shows.

Battery EV (BEV) sales surged by 32% YoY, while plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) sales saw a decline of 13% YoY during the quarter. As a result, the EV share of total passenger vehicle sales decreased compared to the previous year.

In terms of overall EV sales, Germany emerged as the leader, closely followed by the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Norway. Meanwhile, the share of EVs in total passenger vehicle sales was the highest in Norway and the Netherlands.
