Finally, X is complying with the Brazilian court to lift its ban
More than 20 million Brazilian users might soon be able to return to the platform without fear of getting fined.
Just a week ago, X was back online for several users in Brazil due to server routing updates meaning people could access the platform without technically breaking the country's laws. This was meant to be a temporary consequence but now it looks like X is ready to get all Brazilians back online – completely legally this time.
The X vs Brazil saga started some months ago and ultimately led to the platform being banned due to failure to comply with certain instructions by the Brazilian Supreme Court. After months of refusal to comply, the Elon Musk-owned social platform has decided to go back on its decision.
The company's lawyers disclosed this in Court filings on Friday. These demands included removing accounts accused of spreading disinformation and appointing a legal representative in Brazil. Elon Musk had previously resisted these requirements, arguing that they infringed on users' freedom of speech.
There has been no official report as to the reason behind the reversing of the decision but, X was charged a $920,000 fine for each day it remained accessible to Brazilians while banned, so that was probably it. X has a significant user base in Brazil, ranking sixth largest among all countries, so it doesn't take many guesses as to why they want it back.
As of now, the Brazil court claims X still has some documentation to submit before it can be said to have fulfilled requests. They granted the company five days to provide them. On the other hand, X's lawyer, André Zonaro Giacchetta, claims all necessary documents have been submitted but things still depend on the court's assessment.
Either way, this is great news for Brazilians as more than 20 million users might soon be able to return to the platform without fear of getting fined.
