Foxconn to make Google Pixel phones in India
The Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro, notably, are still made in China.
For some years now, Taiwanese electronics equipment manufacturing giant Foxconn has been shifting away from China and moving into other Asian markets such as Vietnam and India.
Now, the long-term partner of Apple has got a new ally.
In a report from Reuters, citing sources, Google has teamed up with Foxconn to make its Pixel smartphone in the Indian southern state of Tamil Nadu, the same city where it already assembles Apple's iPhones – although in a different facility.
Foxconn, whose market valuation is nearing $80 billion as of this report, is positioning itself as a formidable player in the industry, and as major phone manufacturers are looking to diversify their supply chain beyond China, the company's expansion plans seem to be paying off.
Right now, it is unclear which of the Pixel phones would be made in India, but it is believed that the Pixel 8 series are likely to be manufactured in Foxconn's Indian facility.
In October 2023, Google announced plans "to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India...to roll out in 2024", adding that it intends "to start with the Pixel 8, and will partner with international and domestic manufacturers to produce Pixel smartphones locally."
The Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro, notably, are still made in China.
Last year, the company reportedly sold 10 million Pixel phones, according to Nikkei Asia, and is poised to exceed those figures by the end of 2024.
