Gemini could soon turn your documents into Podcasts for easy listening
Copying its recent NotebookLM update, this could offer a more interesting way to learn.
It's no secret that Google wants its Gemini AI to be an all-encompassing assistant, deeply integrated into the Android ecosystem. With a host of features already available and more in the works, it’s slowly becoming harder to imagine an Android experience without it.
One of the most exciting tools recently added to Google’s roster is NotebookLM. Launched in July 2023, the AI-powered platform allows users to summarize content and, more recently, generate audio overviews of documents, a particularly helpful feature for students and professionals alike.
Now, rumours are circulating that a key feature from NotebookLM might soon make its way into Gemini. This new addition would allow users to upload PDFs to Gemini and have them transformed into audio summaries or "podcasts," making it easier to consume content on the go.
The process would work similarly to NotebookLM’s audio overviews where after submitting a document, Gemini would use AI-generated voices to discuss the material, providing a more engaging and hands-free way to review long reports, research papers, or notes.
While Google has yet to confirm this feature officially, a recent APK teardown by Android Authority uncovered evidence supporting the change. Code snippets found in the beta version of the Google app include references to “create_podcast” and “Audio Overviews,” suggesting that the functionality is in the works.
If this update rolls out, it could significantly set Gemini apart from other AI assistants like ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Copilot, as it provides a fresh way of obtaining information from the chatbot.
Gemini’s potential to turn static documents into audio content would be perfect for people like me who prefer consuming information passively, like while commuting, exercising or running errands.
It also fits into Google’s larger vision of transforming Gemini into more than just a chatbot. For instance, it recently released an update that allows Gemini to control Spotify and is also gearing up to integrate Gemini with other third-party apps. This is poised to further cement its role as a central hub for the Android experience.
While the feature is still in development, it’s clear that Google is positioning Gemini to be a powerful tool for productivity, learning, and entertainment, making it a must-have for Android users.
