Google makes Gemini AI available for free to Workspace users
Now, Workspace users won't need to pay for the separate $20 Google One AI subscription.
Google has been on a roll lately with how much it’s been updating its Workspace suite. Not long ago, the company started rolling out its Gemini AI to its productivity apps like Doc and Sheets, enabling users to carry out tasks quicker like converting entire documents into different formats, summarising emails, and accessing all their files in Google One Drive through the Gemini app.
Initially, most of these features were only available to those paying $20 per month for the Google One AI Premium subscription while other users had limited access to Gemini's capabilities.
Now, Google has made a significant shift by extending Gemini's advanced capabilities to users on Google Workspace plans. This means that Workspace users can now access Gemini’s tools in apps like Docs, Sheets, and Gmail without needing to pay for the separate $20 Google One AI subscription.
While this might sound like Google just being overly nice, the addition isn't exactly free. With this new addition, the company's president of cloud applications told The Verge that the price of Google Workspace plans would increase by $2. Since that's a lot cheaper than the initial $20, it opens up the way for businesses looking to implement AI in their workflow a bit more.
This move comes after Microsoft made a similar change with its Copilot AI, which was added to Personal and Family plans last year—also with a price increase. Both companies are clearly competing to make their AI tools as widely available as possible.
According to reports, Google Gemini currently has around 42 million active users, while Microsoft’s Copilot has 20–30 million. Google may be ahead for now, but the AI race is still ongoing, and both companies are working hard to stay at the top.
