Google Pay gives way to Google Wallet in the US
Existing payment methods will be automatically transferred to Google Wallet, ensuring a smooth transition.
In a move to consolidate its mobile payment services, Google is discontinuing its standalone payment app, Google Pay app within the US, effective June 4, 2024. This decision comes alongside the discontinuation of peer-to-peer (P2P) payments functionality within the region.
Announced earlier in February, Google Wallet will now be the central hub for all mobile payment needs.
With a user base exceeding 150 million worldwide in up to 42 global markets, including over 25.2 million in the United States alone, according to Earthweb, US users attempting to access the GPay app will be automatically redirected to Google Wallet.
Existing payment methods will be automatically transferred to Google Wallet, ensuring a smooth transition. While it won't offer the in-depth financial tracking features of GPay, it consolidates all the payment methods in one place.
Users can manage payment methods, initiate tap-to-pay transactions at stores, and pay online directly through Google Wallet. Meanwhile, users can still access their Google Pay balance and transfer funds through the Google Pay website.
This change is specific to the US market. Google Pay versions in other countries like India and Singapore will continue to function as usual.
Google hasn't officially stated the reasons behind shutting down the standalone payment app and P2P functionality in the US. However, speculation points towards Google's plan to provide a more unified and potentially more efficient payment experience while eliminating the resource-intensive process of maintaining separate apps.
