During the 2024 Google I/O event, the company announced several projects they had in store for us. Some were new projects like "Project Astra" but others were upgrades to previously launched products like Google Veo, its latest model for generating high-definition video.

Following up on recent announcements, in a recent blog post, the company announced that they have begun to roll out two updates to Gemini. Imagen 3, a fix for the fiasco that was Imagen 2, and Gems, a brand-new addition to the Gemini platform. But what are they?

If you've been a fan of Google and their AI models for a while, Imagen won't be new to you. After users reportedly created historically inaccurate images, such as ethnically diverse Nazis, Google paused the creation of images of people in Imagen 2.

But now, they have released an upgraded and improved version of their image generation model, Imagen 3, as a fix for that.

According to Google, it offers a new standard for image quality, generating images with just a few words. It can also generate hyperrealistic images in almost any style you can think of, like the one below.

They have also re-added its ability to generate images of humans, but, Imagen 3 does not support photorealistic images of people, depictions of minors, or excessively violent or sexual scenes.

The other new feature they announced, Gems, is a bit different. This new feature allows you to essentially create and train your Chatbot for a specific task or purpose. You can think of it as an assistant that you can train to then train you.

In the blog post, Google gave examples of what Gems is capable of. According to them, it can be trained to be your learning coach or be your writing editor who edits specifically in the style you train it with. It could even be your coding partner.

A lot of its functionality sounds work or learning-related which is probably why they announced that Gems will only be available to Gemini advanced subscribers (this includes Gemini business and Enterprise users). The Imagen 3 on the other hand will be made available to everyone so you can have a swing at your own 'art' soon.

Google has already started rolling out Google Gems for Gemini Advanced subscribers, but, over the coming days, they will begin to roll out Imagen 3 for all Gemini users too.
