Google to cut 240 jobs in Ireland as part of global layoffs

Google parent Alphabet will cut 240 jobs from its operations in Ireland as part of a reduction in its global workforce, a report by Bloomberg stated.

The layoffs by the Silicon Valley tech firm will affect roughly 4% of its 5,500 employees in Ireland, where its headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa is located.

This comes just a week after the company laid off 453 employees in its India offices

According to the email sent to employees, 85 sales roles, 80 engineering and technology jobs and 75 support function roles including positions in people operations and finance teams will be impacted by the layoffs.

In January, Alphabet announced it would trim 12,000 jobs worldwide, about 6% of its global workforce, a move several other tech companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, Intel and eBay have also said they would make in the year, as a result of the economic crunch in the technology industry.
