Google’s Gemini Live voice mode is now free for Android users
Much like ChatGPT's voice chat feature.
Last month, during the Pixel 9 launch event, Google first teased Gemini Live, its innovative voice chat feature. Initially, the function was limited to Gemini Advanced subscribers, but that exclusivity has now ended. Google has officially opened the gates, offering Gemini Live to about 4 billion Android users, per Business of Apps —for free.
Previously hidden behind a $20 monthly membership, it is now available and rolling out to anyone with an Android device. This update removes the paywall, giving users complete access to Gemini Live's conversational AI via the Gemini app or its handy overlay.
Much like ChatGPT's voice chat feature, Gemini Live allows you to speak your queries aloud and even interrupt mid-sentence if something pops into your mind. Plus, Gemini adds a personal touch with multiple voice options, so you can choose a voice that suits your mood or context. However, don’t expect anything like the controversial Scarlett Johansson AI voice that landed OpenAI in legal trouble.
This interactive voice mode isn’t just for casual conversation, it allows for a dynamic back-and-forth exchange where you can clarify ideas, ask follow-up questions, and refine your thoughts as you go. This could be a game-changer for writers struggling with creative blocks, students cramming for exams, or professionals brainstorming complex problems.
The best part is that it makes the conversations more organic making it feel less like you're talking to a machine and more like engaging in a real-time discussion.
To use Gemini Live, update or download the Gemini app from the Google Play Store, then activate Live Voice Mode by tapping the waveform icon. From there, you can control the conversation with options to “hold” or “end” responses as needed.
Currently available in English, Gemini Live will soon support more languages and iOS, expanding its reach.
With this rollout, Google stacks up against its competitors like ChatGPT’s voice feature, which is still in limited alpha testing and available only to a small group of paying ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Meanwhile, Google’s offering is free, instantly available, and highly functional for a broad user base.
Its release comes at a time when productivity-boosting AI tools are carving out a niche in both personal and professional spaces.
By enabling real-time, conversational AI interactions for free on Android, Google has opened up a world of possibilities for users to tap into solutions on the go.
