Google's Gemini Live will become multilingual soon
The company is rolling out support for at least 40 languages.
In August of this year, Google unveiled Gemini Live at the Made By Google 2024 event, a new way to interact with your device, making it feel more like a personal companion than just a tool. The only problem was, that it initially only understood English.
Now, the company is rolling out support for at least 40 languages.
This builds on the initial expansion of Gemini Live’s language capabilities, which started at the same event in August. At that time, support was added for languages such as French, German, Portuguese, Hindi, and Spanish.
Now, Google aims to make Gemini Live accessible to a broader global audience, allowing anyone—regardless of language or location—to interact easily with its AI assistant.
Gemini Live was originally a premium feature. Not long after its launch, Google made it free for Android users, giving them access to a personal AI assistant. The rollout has made it available to several users and now, it seems Google is ready to load up the AI model with as many features as possible.
Other major AI assistant chatbots like Copilot and ChatGPT have also introduced versions of this feature a while back, allowing users to have live conversations with their AI chatbots. However, Gemini Live's upcoming expansion is set to put it ahead in terms of language support, with Copilot V2 reportedly supporting about 29 languages and ChatGPT's Advanced Voice mode limited to only 15.
Additionally, ChatGPT's Advanced Voice mode is only available only to premium subscribers for $20 while Copilot V2 on the other hand started rolling out recently, completely free to all its users.
As language barriers fall away, AI assistants like Gemini Live are poised to deliver even more personalized and sophisticated experiences. The expansion of Gemini Live’s language capabilities opens up exciting possibilities for AI integration in daily life, from more natural conversations to truly global accessibility. Other AI assistants are also evolving in this direction, signalling a future where seamless AI interaction is the norm rather than the exception.
Meanwhile, Google has yet to provide a specific launch date for this language expansion. However, given that they've already announced the expansion and have started rolling out the initial five languages, it's likely that the remaining languages will be added gradually over the coming weeks or months.
