These smartphones, featuring the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra, blend sleek design, slightly refined hardware, and more AI capabilities to offer a more personalized user experience than ever before.

However, the hardware changes this year were noticeably subtle, with Samsung doubling down on AI instead, making it the true star of the show. This year’s event showcased Samsung’s focus on AI integration, aiming to transform their devices from powerful smartphones into truly smart companions.

As anticipated, Samsung unveiled its flagship lineup for 2025: the Galaxy S25, S25+, and the top-of-the-line Galaxy S25 Ultra. Each phone is sleeker, lighter, and more durable than its predecessor, but it’s the AI capabilities that stole the show this year.

Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, now powering every Galaxy model globally (RIP, Exynos), is the backbone of these AI-enhanced features. With more on-device AI processing than ever before, Samsung promised a “true AI companion” that feels intuitive, personal, and powerful.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the S25 lineup:

Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra remains the showstopper of the Galaxy lineup, cementing its place as the ultimate flagship.

At first glance, it’s clear that Samsung focused on refining the Ultra rather than overhauling it. This year’s design softens the once-boxy edges, making it more comfortable to hold despite its size

The ultra device maintains its massive 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The display is protected by the new Corning Gorilla Armor 2, which offers improved scratch resistance and glare reduction. All this is housed in a lightweight titanium body that Samsung proudly called its “slimmest, lightest, and most durable Galaxy Ultra ever.”

On the camera front, the Ultra remains a photography powerhouse. While most of its lenses are carried over from the S24 Ultra, the ultrawide sensor gets a significant upgrade, jumping from 12MP to 50MP for sharper, more detailed wide-angle shots. Samsung also retired the Air Commands feature for the S Pen, citing low user engagement, though the stylus itself remains a staple.

Under the hood, the Ultra packs 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and an IP68 water resistance rating. Starting at $1,300, it’s still a premium investment, but Samsung’s upgrades aim to keep it as the gold standard for flagship phones.

Key Features of the Galaxy S25 Ultra:

  • Display: 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate
  • Build: Titanium body, Corning Gorilla Armor 2 screen protection
  • Cameras: 200MP wide, 50MP ultrawide, 10MP and 50MP telephoto lenses; 12MP selfie camera
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, 12GB RAM, up to 1TB storage
  • Colours: Titanium Silverblue, Titanium Whitesilver, Titanium Gray, Titanium Black (with exclusive colours on Samsung.com like Pinkgold and Jadegreen)
  • Starting Price: $1,300

Galaxy S25+

If the Ultra feels like too much but you still want a larger device, the Galaxy S25+ is the perfect middle ground. Its 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display is slightly more compact than the Ultra’s but still offers the same 120Hz refresh rate for a smooth, immersive experience.

Samsung kept the design slim and refined, with the S25+ clocking in at 7.3mm thick and weighing 190 grams, making it thinner and lighter than its predecessor. Durability hasn’t been sacrificed, as the phone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and features an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

On the camera front, the S25+ carries the same setup as the standard S25, with a 50MP wide sensor, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto lens. Samsung’s ProScaler AI tool ensures that even without new hardware, the cameras can deliver sharper, brighter images by using real-time upscaling.

Powering the S25+ is the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, which also drives Samsung’s growing list of AI features, including AI Select and Now Brief, to make the phone feel smarter and more intuitive. With a starting price of $1,000, the S25+ delivers premium features without breaking the bank.

Key Features of the Galaxy S25+:

  • Display: 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate
  • Build: Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, IP68 water and dust resistance
  • Cameras: 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto; 12MP selfie camera
  • Battery: 4,900mAh
  • Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, 12GB RAM, up to 512GB storage
  • Colours: Navy, Icyblue, Mint, Silver (exclusive Coralred and Pinkgold options via Samsung.com)
  • Starting Price: $1,000

For those who prefer smaller phones, the Galaxy S25 delivers flagship-level performance in a compact package. Its 6.2-inch FHD+ AMOLED display offers the same vibrant colors and 120Hz refresh rate as its bigger siblings, but in a more pocket-friendly size.

The design is slim and sleek, weighing just 162 grams and measuring 7.2mm thick, making it one of the lightest S-series phones yet. It’s just as durable as the S25+, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and IP68 water resistance for added protection.

The camera system on the Galaxy S25 mirrors the S25+, with a 50MP main sensor, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto lens. The AI-powered ProScaler tool enhances image quality, ensuring even casual shots look professional.

With the same Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 12GB of RAM as the rest of the series, the S25 punches well above its weight in terms of performance. Starting at $800, it’s the most affordable entry point into Samsung’s flagship lineup this year.

Key Features of the Galaxy S25:

  • Display: 6.2-inch FHD+ AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate
  • Build: Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, IP68 water and dust resistance
  • Cameras: 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto; 12MP selfie camera
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, 12GB RAM, up to 256GB storage
  • Colours: Navy, Icyblue, Mint, Silver (exclusive Coralred and Pinkgold options via Samsung.com)
  • Starting Price: $800

Galaxy AI

Samsung spent a significant portion of the event highlighting how its AI ecosystem, built into One UI 7, is evolving. Collaborating with Google, Samsung introduced Gemini as the new default on-device AI assistant, officially replacing Bixby. This change marks a shift toward enabling cross-app actions, making tasks faster and more seamless than ever.

One of the standout features of this AI overhaul is Gemini’s ability to multitask across apps. For instance, you can ask Gemini to search for nearby restaurants via Google Maps and immediately compose a message to share those recommendations through Google Messages—all within a single prompt. Additionally, Gemini Live received significant upgrades, including real-time spoken feedback for practising presentations and the ability to upload files into conversations, making it even more versatile and context-aware.

Samsung also introduced a suite of new features under the Galaxy AI umbrella:

  • Circle to Search: A now-multimodal tool that recognizes URLs, phone numbers, and even sounds from visuals and videos.
  • Audio Eraser: Lets you isolate or remove specific audio elements—like wind or background noise—from recorded videos.
  • AI Photo Search: A voice-powered tool for locating specific photos in your gallery.
  • Settings Search: Simplifies adjustments like toggling dark mode with a single voice command.

The Personal Data Engine, a standout feature, processes information locally on the phone rather than relying on the cloud, ensuring privacy while tailoring suggestions based on your habits. It powers tools like AI Select, which scans your screen to suggest actions like creating a GIF or adding dates to your calendar. Meanwhile, Now Brief anticipates your needs, suggesting actions directly from the lock screen based on your routines. Samsung claimed these advancements represent a “new standard” in how users interact with their phones, blending personalization and intelligence into daily tasks.

Together, these AI enhancements underscore Samsung’s commitment to using AI to make its devices more personalized and intuitive, putting powerful tools at users’ fingertips while safeguarding privacy.

Samsung closed out the event by teasing the Galaxy S25 Edge, its rumoured “slim phone.” While details were scarce, Samsung gave us a glimpse of the Edge’s impossibly thin design, complete with a dual-camera setup and a sleek metallic frame.

Samsung described the Edge as the “culmination of our most innovative technology,” but we’ll have to wait for more information later this year. It’s clear, though, that the Edge is designed to appeal to users who want a more minimalist smartphone without sacrificing premium features.

Samsung took first steps into mixed reality giving us a first look at its Project Moohan mixed reality headset, developed with Google and Qualcomm. Resembling sleek ski goggles, the device runs on Android XR and aims to rival Apple’s Vision Pro. While details were light, Samsung hinted at a summer release for more information, making it clear they’re serious about the future of XR.

Samsung unveils new VR Headset slated for 2025 release
Whether Project Moohan can compete with Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest headset will hinge on its price, performance, and content.

Final Thoughts

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event may not have delivered revolutionary hardware upgrades, but its emphasis on AI and meaningful refinements shows a clear vision for the future.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra remains the crown jewel for those who want it all, while the S25 and S25+ offer great value with a dose of cutting-edge tech. And with the teased Galaxy S25 Edge and Project Moohan headset, Samsung is keeping its innovation pipeline full.

The Galaxy S25 lineup is available for pre-order now, with shipments starting February 7. Will these updates be enough to tempt you to upgrade?
