We all love to enjoy our music, podcasts, or videos with the perfect sound, whether it's through wired or wireless headphones. But did you know that listening to loud music for long periods can actually damage your hearing?

The good news is, your iPhone is here to help you keep your ears safe. It comes with a built-in hearing tool that allows you to measure the decibel levels of the audio you're listening to through your headphones.

This feature helps you stay aware of the sound intensity, ensuring you're not pushing your ears to dangerous levels without realizing it. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to enable and access this tool, so you can enjoy your tunes while protecting your hearing at the same time.

How to Measure the Decibels of Audio on an iPhone

Step 1: Swipe from the top-right corner on your device to open control center

Step 2: Long press any part of the screen except for the icons and the text Add a Control will appear at the bottom of the screen, click on it

Step 3: In the controls settings, scroll down to the Hearing Accessibility section and select Hearing to add it to your control center

Step 4: Open the Settings on your device

Step 5: Once you open the Settings, scroll down to Privacy & Security and click on it

Step 6: Then click on Health in Privacy & Security

Step 7: Select Headphone Audio Levels

💡
These steps are for iPhones running iOS 18.1, for newer updates it might be different.

Step 8: Switch on the toggle for Include Other Headphones

Step 9: Open up control center again by swiping from the right-hand corner on your screen

Step 10: The Hearing control shows the current sound level coming through your headphones. Just tap on it to expand and see the noise level measured in decibels

💡
If the volume is below 80 dB, the decibel level will appear in green—indicating it's safe for your ears. But if the sound goes above 80 dB, you'll see an orange warning with an exclamation mark, signaling that it's too loud and you should turn it down to protect your hearing.

Conclusion

If you want to measure how loud your headphone volume is, your iPhone makes it super easy to stay aware and protect your ears. A few taps can go a long way in keeping your hearing safe—so go ahead and give it a try!
