CHART: Indonesia’s smartphone market witnessed its 8th consecutive quarter decline
In Indonesia, the smartphone market faced its eighth consecutive decline in Q2 2023, falling 6.3% in the quarter. However, it experienced a seasonal increase of 13.8% compared to the previous quarter, reaching a total of 8.9 million units, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
This growth was primarily driven by more affordable smartphones in the entry-level category. As a result, the decline in smartphone sales compared to the previous year was smaller, with 4G smartphones becoming more popular again, making up 86% of the market. On the other hand, 5G smartphone sales dropped by 4.3% compared to the previous year, marking the first decline since their introduction in 2020.
Interestingly, higher-priced smartphones in the >US$600 segment saw a remarkable 71% YoY growth, driven by fierce competition between Samsung and Apple. Techloy analysis of the shipment figures further shows that major smartphone brands, with the exception of Transsion, experienced significant declines, as shown in the chart below.
